04 | 2010 - DPD's parcel service to Europe unaffected by volcanic ash

Copenhagen, 22 April - While closed airspace have significant delays in shipments throughout Europe, so has the international parcel and express business DPD offered stable delivery times. This is due to not least DPD's efficient transport network on European roads, which ensures that delivery times are only one or two days longer than express consignments sent by air freight.

A large part of the European air transport is still affected by the outbreak of the Icelandic volcano, and at present it is difficult to predict when the situation will become normal again. Even after the reopening of European airports, it will take some time to clear the backlog of packets distributed by air, as the canceled flights has created. “Our transport network of roads in Europe, has not been affected by the ash cloud from the volcano, and our distribution to recipients in Europe works with the usual punctuality and reliability", says Jakob í Hjøllum Nielsen, chief of DPD Operations in Denmark. “Our strategy is to focus on the strengths of the road and our efficient network in Europe. Both in terms of economy and environmental concerns, there are many benefits of road transport over the air. With delivery times, often only marginally longer, cost of transport up to five times lower, and the amount of greenhouse gases up to eight times less than in air cargo”, says Jakob í Hjøllum Nielsen.

On the information portal whyflyparcels.com you can read detailed descriptions of the economic and environmental benefits of switching from air to road transport.
