Positive interim balance: delivery by cargo bike in Dortmund reduces local emissions.

In January 2021 the city of Dortmund launched a new micro-depot project open to all parcel service providers. DPD Germany is also participating with two cargo bikes. Up to 200 parcels can be delivered daily in the surrounding inner city area.

In its current form the project in Dortmund is a temporary solution, in which five overseas containers can be used as micro-depots. DPD and three other parcel service providers will participate in the project until February 2022 to gain practical experience in delivery by cargo bike in Dortmund's city centre.  After that the city would like to provide a permanent infrastructure.

In a scientific monitoring project the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics and agiplan GmbH have shown that the four parcel services are making intensive use of the Ostwall micro-depot. The first interim results have already been recorded: in the first three months of operation more than 6,000 shipments were delivered by cargo bike with zero local emissions, about a quarter of them by DPD Germany.

89% less CO2 by 2025

Dortmund is one of 23 German cities in which DPDgroup will be implementing its new green delivery strategy. Low-emission delivery will be introduced in 225 European cities by 2025. This should result in 89% less CO2 and 80% fewer pollutants than in 2020. At the heart of this is a delivery model that rethinks urban deliveries across the board - with micro-depots and urban depots, but also including alternative delivery methods and locally zero-emission drive systems. In Germany DPD is gradually implementing this objective in 23 inner cities: Augsburg, Berlin, Bonn, Bremen, Cologne, Dortmund, Dresden, Düsseldorf, Essen, Frankfurt, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Hamm, Hanover, Kiel, Leipzig, Mannheim, Munich, Nuremberg, Oberhausen, Stuttgart, Wiesbaden and Wuppertal.
