Aschaffenburg, 28 December 2016 – DPD Germany can look back on the most successful Christmas business in the history of the company, with the international parcel and express service provider transporting a record number of parcels in the weeks before Christmas. Many consumers did their Christmas shopping early this year, as a result of which the record volumes were distributed more evenly across the holiday season. For DPD the day with the largest quantity of parcels was 20 December, on which the company shipped 2.06 million parcels throughout the country. During peak times the DPD drivers were delivering more than 300,000 parcels an hour to both private and business consignees. Compared to the 2015 Christmas season DPD registered a 15% growth in volumes and - at around 10% - parcel quantities once more showed a double-digit increase on the average for the rest of the year.
The number of returns also rose significantly in December. DPD expects that post-Christmas return shipments will continue to rise up to the middle of January. For January as a whole DPD expects up to 40% more returns than during a normal average month. The reason for this is the boom in e-commerce: growth on the parcels market is being driven above all by shipments to private consignees. For some types of goods within the B2C segment the return figures are very high, with the HDE and IfH Cologne organisations reporting that in the clothing field around 57% of shipments are returned to the shipper.
More than one million redirections before Christmas, accompanied by one million downloads of the DPD app
This year DPD's Christmas business was more than ever characterised by digital services which enable more convenient and efficient delivery. Usage figures on mobile devices, in particular, are rising dramatically. Shortly before Christmas DPD registered the one millionth download of the company's app. Both the app and the company's online portal paketnavigator.de currently have user figures of 2.5 million per month, with more than 300,000 users already registered – four times as many as just one year ago. In addition to map-based live tracking and a delivery forecast which is accurate to the last 30 minutes, the app and the Parcel Navigator also offer a range of possibilities for redirecting parcels individually. In the run-up to Christmas these redirection options were used more than one million times.
In the pre-Christmas period the most popular delivery option was the so-called 'deposit okay'. This enables consignees to specify that their shipment should be left in a safe place, for example in the garage or garden shed. Further alternatives are delivery to a parcel shop, to a specific neighbour or to the consignee's place of work. In contrast there was a decline in the number of consignees selecting a different date for a further home delivery – before Christmas only 17% of consignees opted for this possibility.
DPD's Pickup parcelshop network: 50% growth in volume
There was a highly positive development in DPD's countrywide network of parcel shops. Compared to the 2015 Christmas season the volume of parcels handled by the company's Pickup parcelshops once more rose by around 50%. The main reason for this development is that the parcel shops are playing a steadily rising role as an alternative delivery and pickup point. They enable consignees who are not at home during the day to collect their shipment from one of the 6,000 Pickup parcelshops throughout the country at a time which is convenient to them. Many consignees take advantage of the possibility of themselves selecting the parcel shop to which their parcel is delivered. Thanks to this option, for example, collecting a parcel can be carried out conveniently and flexibly on the way home from work.
Aschaffenburg, 19 December 2016 – With the establishment of a charitable foundation international parcel and express service provider DPD Germany is expanding its social commitments within Germany and abroad. The aim of the DPD Foundation is to help people who are in serious difficulties. For this purpose it will, for example, support the projects and sponsorships of the children's aid organisation Plan International. In addition, the DPD Foundation will also provide support for the company's own employees who have suffered misfortune. The DPD Foundation has been founded under the aegis of the 'Hilfe mit Plan' trust, which works closely together with Plan International.
"As a parcel service we bring together millions of people every day. Closeness to people is therefore also the guiding principle of our newly established DPD Foundation which will, in a range of different ways, promote the kind of solidarity and cooperation which makes life worth living", explains DPD CEO Boris Winkelmann. "Together with Plan International the aim of the DPD Foundation is to help in providing children all around the world with better educational opportunities."
In accordance with its constitution the DPD Foundation will in particular support the needs and rights of children, young adults and families. The main focus will be on fighting poverty and promoting educational projects. A central element of the activities of the Foundation will therefore be its partnership with the children's aid organisation Plan International Deutschland. In addition the DPD Foundation will also cooperate with other partners in achieving its purposes.
From the very start the DPD Foundation will adopt more than 100 sponsorships for children in Africa, Asia and Latin America. In this way Plan International supports projects aimed at improving the lives of the children as well as their families and communities, with particular focus on improving their educational opportunities. At DPD these sponsorships are the responsibility of the company's trainees at locations throughout Germany. The number of sponsorships will increase continuously, and over time there will be support for further Plan International projects.
Within the scope of the DPD Foundation an aid fund provides support for DPD employees who are experiencing personal difficulties or an emergency situation. The fund also supports transport operators and delivery personnel working on behalf of DPD. "Within the DPD family we provide help in cases where people find themselves in need suddenly and through no fault of their own. This is a sign of solidarity with all those who operate on our behalf day in, day out", states DPD CEO Boris Winkelmann.
The 'Hilfe mit Plan' trust administers the funds on a charitable basis in accordance with the aims of the DPD Foundation. The trust supports the projects of Plan International Deutschland e.V., and in addition functions as an umbrella organisation for a number of other foundations.
Social responsibility is one of the four pillars of the DrivingChange™ sustainability strategy which was launched in February of this year for the entire international DPDgroup. The direct involvement of employees is a central factor, as the responsibility of trainees for the Plan International sponsorships indicates. The further pillars of DrivingChange™ are intelligent city logistics, innovative entrepreneurial action and carbon-neutral shipping for parcels.

Steinen/Aschaffenburg, 8 December 2016 – International parcel and express service provider DPD is expanding its countrywide network in Germany and investing approximately €16 million in a new parcel sorting centre in Steinen. Close to the Swiss border near Lörrach, the new DPD depot will cover an area of 30,000 m². Initially it will have a workforce of around 80, but in future the capacities of the location can be expanded significantly.
"Our new location in Steinen is an important extension to our infrastructure in the south-west of Germany", explains Thomas Ohnhaus, Regional Manager at DPD Germany. "Thanks to this investment we will be prepared even better for the growing parcel volumes which DPD expects, in particular with deliveries to private consignees. My personal thanks go to the municipality of Steinen, which has provided us with highly constructive and professional support in the establishment of our new depot."
When it comes into operation in the autumn of 2017 the 78th location of DPD Germany will above all relieve the pressure on the existing parcel depot in Freiburg. From the Steinen location DPD will make deliveries to the south-west corner of Germany where three countries meet, as well as along the Upper Rhine in the southern region of the Black Forest up to Müllheim. Initially up to 10,000 parcels a day will be sorted and distributed in Steinen by a workforce of 80, but the available capacity can be expanded further in future. The general contractor for the project is LIST Bau Nordhorn GmbH & Co. KG, while DAL Deutsche Anlagen-Leasing is involved as an investor.
One important feature of the new depot in Steinen will be its high level of energy efficiency. For example it will have its own solar installation for heating water, while central heating will be provided by an air-to-water heat pump. In addition the new location will mean shorter delivery distances, which will reduce transport-related CO2 emissions. DPD's environmental and energy management system is certified in accordance with DIN 14001 and DIN 50001 standards, while DPD Germany is committed to fully carbon-neutral parcel shipping.

Aschaffenburg, 22 November 2016 – In Germany international parcel and express service provider DPD now also enjoys certification in accordance with the DIN EN ISO 50001 energy management standard. At the same time DPD has introduced an integrated management system which, within the framework of a comprehensive corporate policy, also covers all quality and environmental aspects. Within this context DPD has also received further certification of its quality management system in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9001, and of its environmental management system in accordance with DIN EN ISO 14001. The certification covers all the 76 depots operated by DPD Germany and the company's HQ locations. The independent audit was carried out by the international DNV GL certifying organisation.
"We set ourselves high standards and it is our aim to offer our customers a high level of quality and reliability. At the same time we assume social and environmental responsibility", states DPD CEO Boris Winkelmann, adding: "An integrated management system will enable DPD to ensure that these objectives are implemented in a measurable way and can be subjected to independent audit."

Aschaffenburg, 17 November 2016 – Christmas time is parcel time: this year, too, many gifts will make their way to far-off loved ones in the form of parcels sent throughout Germany and well beyond. To make sure that these Christmas parcels reach the consignee punctually and intact, international parcel and express service provider DPD has compiled the most important deadlines and shipping advice for you.
Sending parcels in good time
To ensure that they arrive within Germany in good time for Christmas Eve, this year DPD recommends sending off standard parcels at the latest by 12 noon on 22 December. In the case of international shipments to EU countries, the latest shipping date to ensure Christmas delivery is between 16 and 21 December, depending on the country of destination. Online the Delivery time calculator on the DPD website provides fast and convenient information about delivery times in international shipping.
Tracking parcels live – and simply redirecting them if necessary
Those who wish to track their gifts online can do so without difficulty, for example on the online platform paketnavigator.de or in mobile form using the DPD app. Thanks to DPD's map-based live tracking service, consignees can check in real-time on a precise online map exactly where their parcel is at any time. In addition, for every parcel DPD provides a delivery forecast which is precise to the last 60 minutes. In the course of the delivery process this forecast is even narrowed down to 30 minutes. As a result consignees know exactly when their Christmas shipment will arrive. Anyone who won't be at home at this time can simply use one of DPD's digital delivery options. For example, the consignee can arrange for the shipment to be left in a safe place. Alternatively the delivery can be digitally postponed to a different day. In addition, shipments can be individually redirected, for example to a parcel shop, a different address (e.g. the consignee's place of work), or to a specified neighbour.
Giving a digital rating and – if satisfied – a tip via PayPal
After their shipment has been delivered consignees can rate the delivery service with the DPD app or on paketnavigator.de. Since it was introduced one year ago this rating function has already been applied by 500,000 consignees, with the delivery service receiving an average of 4 out of a possible 5 stars. And those who are especially satisfied with the delivery can give the driver a pre-Christmas digital tip via PayPal. With this feature DPD offers a service which is unique for the industry and – especially over the Christmas period – benefits both consignees and delivery personnel.
The right packing and labellingTo make sure that Christmas gifts arrive safely, it's worth keeping in mind the following basic rules for packing and labelling:
- The shipping carton should be robust and free from damage. In addition the cardboard must be strong enough for the weight of the contents.
- The shipping carton should not be decorated with gift wrapping or ribbons, because these could get caught up in the automatic sorting equipment.
- The contents of the parcel should not be able to move around inside the box.
- Fragile articles should not come into contact with the external packaging. Bubble wrap and other packaging materials provide additional protection.
- The parcel label should always be applied to the largest surface of the parcel. If other stickers are used in addition to the label (e.g. for additional address information), they must not overlap. Old stickers and labels should be removed and any old barcodes should be rendered unreadable.
- Additional tip: a telephone number under which the consignee can be reached is useful, not just for international shipments
Pickup parcelshops: making parcel shipping easy
The Parcel shop finder on the DPD website makes it easy to find the nearest of DPD's well over 6,000 Pickup parcelshops. The website also gives details about the hours of business of the shops. In addition, parcel labels can conveniently be created online at www.dpdwebpaket.de. You then simply hand in the parcel at the local parcel shop and display your smartphone with the mobile label - DPD takes care of everything else.
Aschaffenburg, 16 November 2016 – This year 77% of Germany's online shoppers intend to buy Christmas presents on the Internet, and 14% say they will spend more than last year. On average, planned spending per person amounts to 221 euros. These are the results of an international survey carried out by the opinion polling agency Kantar TNS on behalf of DPDgroup. Throughout Europe Kantar TNS surveyed more than 23,000 online shoppers in 21 European countries in September and October of this year. With their planned expenditure e-commerce customers in Germany are close to the European average of 217 euros. The biggest spenders are the Irish, who are planning to put presents with an average value of 305 eurosunder the Christmas tree, with Great Britain and Switzerland following in second and third places.
At 41% books are the largest product category purchased in Germany, while CDs/DVDs and video games (36%) and toys (33%) are also highly popular. Particularly strong growth compared to last year is registered by kitchen and household appliances. Although only 9% of online shoppers make purchases in this segment, 29% of them are planning to spend more on this category of goods in comparison to 2015. High-tech and electronic articles are also registering strong growth, with 25% of German online shoppers planning to spend more money on these products than last year.
The right delivery options are an important factor in purchasing decisions
Throughout the whole of Europe the delivery options for goods play a decisive role in the online purchasing of Christmas presents. The greatest relevance as a driver of purchasing decisions is fast delivery on the very next working day (important for 90% of online shoppers). Almost equally important for online shoppers (at 88%) is for the consignee to have a range of possibilities for redirecting a shipment, for example selecting a different place or day for the delivery. Real-time information about the delivery is an important criterion for online purchasing, with 87% of purchasers attaching great value to this feature.
With DPD the individual redirection of parcels can be implemented either on the paketnavigator.de online platform or using the DPD app. In addition, all consignees know exactly when their DPD parcel will arrive. This is ensured by a delivery forecast which is accurate down to the last 60 minutes. In addition DPD's map-based live tracking function enables consignees to see where their parcel is at any given time. Consignees who will not be at home at the forecast time have a range of flexible options to redirect a shipment even before delivery: for example to a different address, to a specified neighbour or to a Pickup parcelshop. Specifying a different day for the delivery is also possible. The DPD app enabling the 'remote control' of parcel deliveries on all mobile devices has already received a number of awards, most recently for example the eco Internet Award of Germany's Internet Association, the German Prize for Online Communication and the UX Design Award.
Male, young, urban: the typical online shopper in Germany
The Kantar TNS survey has also revealed the profile of a typical online shopper: nearly two thirds (63%) of e-commerce customers who are intending to spend more money on Christmas presents this year are male. 90% of online Christmas shoppers live in the city, and 59% are in the 18 – 34 age range. In contrast, only 10% of all consumers who are planning to buy more Christmas gifts online this year are aged over 55.
Aschaffenburg / Salzgitter, 10 November 2016 – In view of its constantly rising parcel volumes, international parcel and express service provider DPD Germany has significantly expanded its capacities in Salzgitter: thanks to investment of 7.5 million euros the depot will in future be able to sort 11,000 parcels per hour, instead of the previous 7,000. This has been enabled by the construction of a new unloading facility and sorting hall. Among other areas the cities of Braunschweig, Wolfsburg and Hildesheim are served from Salzgitter, while from January 2017 the Goslar area will be added to this.
"Throughout Germany DPD is registering strong growth rates, not least on account of the boom in e-commerce", explains Regional Manager Dr. Jörg Schmeidler. "Sustainable growth can only be ensured by the continuous expansion of our network. We therefore regard this investment of 7.5 million euros as a long-term commitment to Salzgitter and the jobs at this location."
After the expansion up to 27,000 parcels a day will be sorted and distributed at Salzgitter, which represents a growth in capacity of approximately 50%. The enlargement of the depot will mean an increase in the number of delivery personnel from 120 to 140. In theory the number of delivery tours can be expanded to over 180. In addition 15 new jobs will be created in parcel sorting operations.
The expansion was implemented while normal depot operations continued, and the general contractors, LIST BAU Nordhorn GmbH & Co. KG, handed over the new sections of the building to DPD in October, after a construction period of only six months. The Aschaffenburg property developers Bau- und Immobilienverwaltung Fäth were also involved in the expansion as an investor.
DPD has operated a depot in Salzgitter-Watenstedt since 1997, and currently the location has a staff of 230.

Last year DPD transported more parcels than ever before, but the company is expecting a further increase of 15% compared to Christmas 2015. On peak days before Christmas DPD will deliver more than 300,000 parcels per hour and over 2 million parcels a day. In order to manage these record volumes, up to 4,000 additional personnel will be making parcel deliveries and manning the sorting and distribution centres. DPD will also register strong growth in the use of its digital services, which enable more convenient and efficient delivery. In addition, an analysis of user behaviour on DPD's digital channels indicates that the alternatives to home delivery are becoming ever more popular.
During the Christmas period daily parcel volumes will be up to 50% higher than on a normal delivery day in 2016, with the boom in e-commerce as the most important driver of this increase. At present more than 35% of the parcels transported by DPD are destined for private consignees – a trend which continues to rise. "With the growing proportion of private consignees our digital services are becoming increasingly important", states DPD CEO Boris Winkelmann. "We have noticed that more and more consignees wish to track their parcel shipments and manage them individually, and are delighted that they are taking full advantage of the many individual possibilities which we offer them for this purpose on our digital channels. This is the only way that deliveries which are both convenient and efficient can be enabled during the busy Christmas period."
The use of digital parcel services is rising dramatically, on mobile devices in particular. Accordingly DPD expects more than 1 million downloads of the DPD app by the end of the year. The app and the company's own online portal paketnavigator.de currently have 2.5 million users per month, with a further 300,000 users who have already registered – this is four times more registered users than just one year ago. In addition to a delivery forecast which is accurate down to 30 minutes and map-based parcel tracking in real-time, the app and the Parcel Navigator also offer numerous possibilities for specifying individual delivery arrangements. For example, consignees can give instructions for their shipment to be deposited at a secure location, or arrange digitally for the delivery to be made on a different day. In addition every shipment can be individually redirected, for example to a parcel shop, to a different address (e.g. the consignee's place of work), or to a specific neighbour.
The app also enables consignees to give a digital tip to the delivery driver via PayPal, and to rate DPD's service. Since its launch one year ago this rating function has already been used by 500,000 consignees, who have given the delivery service an average rating of 4 out of 5 possible stars.
For its efficient exploitation of digital potentials the DPD app has already received multiple awards: this year alone, for example, it has received the eco Internet Award of Germany's Internet Association, the German Prize for Online Communication and the UX Design Award.
Digital services: alternatives to home delivery are becoming increasingly popular
As in the past, most parcels destined for private consignees are still delivered to the front door and personally handed over. However, an analysis of user behaviour on DPD's digital channels indicates that alternatives to such home deliveries are gaining in popularity. On these digital channels the so-called 'deposit okay' is - at 53% - the most frequently selected delivery option. This option enables consignees to specify that their shipment should be left in a safe place, for example in the garage or in the garden shed. A new feature which is now available in the DPD app enables registered users not just to provide a one-off deposit okay for a specific shipment, but also to give DPD general authorisation to deposit all future parcels.
Further alternatives are delivery to a parcel shop (selected by 13%), to a specific neighbour (10%), or to a different address such as the consignee's place of work (8%). In contrast there is a decline in the number of consignees who select a different date for a further home delivery. At present this is selected by only approx. 15% of those consignees who specify a preferred delivery option in the DPD app or Parcel Navigator. Only one year ago the number of users who provided a date for a further home delivery still amounted to 24%.
Aschaffenburg, 3 November 2016 – How will autonomous driving transform the parcel market in future? Answers to this question are now provided by a joint research paper drawn up by parcel service DPD Germany in cooperation with the fka (Forschungsgesellschaft Kraftfahrwesen mbH Aachen) and ika (RWTH Aachen University's Institut für Kraftfahrzeuge) organisations. Their conclusion is that in future self-driving vehicles will make it possible to deliver at least part of the company's parcel volumes with an unprecedented degree of flexibility. In addition it will enable entirely new delivery concepts, in particular for inner-city areas. In the near future automated vehicle technology will reduce the workload of delivery personnel and significantly increase the efficiency of their operations. Furthermore, in the long term self-drive vehicles could enable major service innovations in parcel delivery, although the legal framework for the application of such revolutionary delivery concepts will probably not be in place until the year 2025 at the earliest.
"Automated, self-drive vehicles represent a megatrend which in future will have a significant effect on everyday life and work", explains Prof. Lutz Eckstein, Head of the Automobile Institute at Aachen's RWTH University, adding: "For the parcel market, too, we can envisage possible applications which will make parcel shipping even more convenient and offer greater efficiency in inner-city deliveries. However, in terms of the legal framework it will still take many years in this sector of industry before driverless vehicles can be used for commercial purposes in Germany to a major extent."
Philipp Anhalt, Director Strategy & Business Development at DPD Germany, comments: "For DPD as a leading international provider of parcel and express services it is essential to keep up to date at all times with the consequences of technological developments on our market. In this context new mobility concepts, in particular those featuring autonomous technology, offer significant potential. On the other hand we don't expect the last mile to become fully automated. Human delivery personnel will continue to play a prominent role here in future, too. However, in the long term we could imagine a new premium segment of the market, in which we make use of fully autonomous vehicles to offer a new degree of delivery convenience."
The research paper (of which the long version is available here) concentrates on actual parcel delivery, in other words the so-called 'last mile', and describes five typical scenarios demonstrating the delivery solutions which autonomous vehicles could make possible in future.
1. Transport by self-drive vehicle to the delivery area: even semi-autonomous systems can significantly increase the time available to delivery personnel for productive operations. For deliveries to inner-city areas, for example, it would be possible for the delivery vehicle to be loaded at the parcel distribution centre and then travel autonomously to a meeting point near the city, where the driver would then take control of it.
2. Autonomous parking in the city centre: thanks to self-dry technology and driver assistance systems, the time required for moving and parking the vehicle could be reduced significantly. In the inner city, in particular, this could give the driver more time to make the actual deliveries, while the vehicle itself took care of parking and short distances between stops.
3. Autonomous mini transporter in the inner city: the growing number of areas where access for motorised forms of parcel delivery is restricted to a limited time window represents a major challenge to parcel services. Autonomous 'mini transporters' on the other hand could follow delivery personnel at walking pace, and accordingly enable efficient delivery operations at any time of day, even in pedestrian precincts.
4. Mobile pickup stations: the combination of a driverless delivery van and automated parcel lockers enables a new form of delivery. Parcels could be made available for collection from the van in a much more flexible way in terms of time and location than is the case with fixed pickup points. The locations for these mobile pickup stations could be flexibly controlled in terms of requirements, while they could also be used as collection points for returns.
5. Consignees control their own delivery vehicle: it may even be possible for consignees to freely control the place and time of delivery of a driverless parcel transporter by app. As a result consignees would be able to take delivery of their parcels whenever it suited them: at home early in the morning, in their lunch hour at work, in the evening at the local park or even at a late-night party.
"The 'remotely controlled' parcel is an option for the future which will be attractive above all for small volumes of high-value parcels", explains Philipp Anhalt, adding: "But in future it will be even more important to provide a high level of flexibility with digital control options for the large bulk of parcel deliveries, too."
Digital innovation for the last mile
DPD already provides a high degree of flexibility along the last mile with a range of digital innovations. Thanks to an accurate delivery forecast consignees now know down to the last hour exactly when their parcel will arrive. If they won't be home at this time a number of options are available to them to redirect the parcel before delivery takes place – to a different address, a specific neighbour or to a DPD Pickup parcelshop, for example. They can also specify a different day for the delivery. Consignees can select these options by means of an online platform or app. The DPD app enabling the remote control of parcels on all mobile devices has already won a number of prizes, most recently with the eco Internet Award presented by Germany's Internet Business Association the German Prize for Online Communication and the UX Design Award.
Intelligent inner-city logistics
Digital innovations for parcel management are also enabling more efficient deliveries in inner-city areas. Transparency and flexibility ensure a higher rate of successful first-time deliveries, which in turn reduces the number of vehicle movements and stops. DPD is also continuously testing further concepts for intelligent inner-city logistics, including the use of fully electric or hybrid delivery vehicles. The company is currently also involved in a field trial covering so-called 'micro depots' in the inner-city. This pilot project, which is being run by Nuremberg's University of Applied Sciences, is testing decentral parcel distribution points in combination with alternative forms of transport such as delivery bikes. 'Intelligent inner-city logistics' and 'innovative entrepreneurial action' are two central pillars of the DrivingChange™ sustainability strategy which was rolled out in February of this year for the entire international DPDgroup. Further areas of action covered by this strategy are 'carbon-neutral parcel transport' and 'social responsibility'.
Aschaffenburg, 10 October 2016 – International parcel and express service provider DPD is - with the acquisition of its last remaining minority shareholder - completing a historic step towards the unification of its ownership structure in Germany. The contracts for the purchase of the shareholding have been signed by representatives of DPD GeoPost (Deutschland) GmbH and DPD Zeitfracht GmbH & Co. KG in Frankfurt am Main and the takeover is to be completed by 1 November 2016, subject to the approval of Germany's competition authorities. Most recently the Zeitfracht group held 6.21 % of the shares in DPD Dynamic Parcel Distribution GmbH & Co. KG. In the course of the acquisition two DPD depots in Berlin and one in Raunheim, which serves the Frankfurt conurbation in Hesse, will be taken over. The 470 Zeitfracht employees and all its locations will be retained, and business relations with all customers and system partners will also be continued without interruption. Confidentiality has been agreed with regard to the purchase amount.
This means that under CEO Boris Winkelmann, who has been in office since 2014, DPD has managed to unify and reinforce its organisational structure in Germany in less than two years: "With this historic development we are creating even better preconditions for driving forward our innovation leadership in the age of e-commerce and the digitalisation of parcel shipping", states DPD CEO Boris Winkelmann. "The achievement of our company's founding partners was massive, and it laid the foundation stone for DPD's incomparable success story. I am therefore delighted that we can now continue on this course together under single ownership."
DPD was founded on 1 April 1976 as Germany's first private parcel service in the form of a joint-venture by 18 leading freight forwarders, and within only a few years had become the German market leader in parcel shipping between business customers – a position it retains to the present day. In response to the growth in online retailing DPD has now also established itself as a major player in parcel shipping to non-business customers, thanks to digital services such as the notification of a one-hour delivery time window, live tracking of parcels in real time using an online map, and the multiple award-winning DPD app.
After acquiring most of the shareholding partners in the company GeoPost, a subsidiary of France's La Poste, has been the majority shareholder in DPD since the year 2001. In March 2015 it acquired – in DPD Systemlogistik – one of the company's remaining minority shareholders with seven locations in southern Germany and Saxony, and approx. 1400 depot staff and delivery personnel. Following that, on 1 September 2015, DPD GeoPost (Deutschland) GmbH also acquired DPD Altentreptow GmbH, which up to that point had served large parts of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with one depot and 140 depot staff and drivers. Accordingly this left DPD Zeitfracht as the only founding freight forwarder which still owned a shareholding in DPD. This latest take-over means that all 76 DPD locations in Germany are now owned by La Poste subsidiary GeoPost.

Aschaffenburg, 14 September 2016 – With new return services in its German parcel shop network, international parcel and express service provider DPD is now offering even greater convenience and flexibility in sending back goods. Thanks to a new multi-carrier solution DPD is now able to process return labels which are used by other parcel services at the same time. This provides e-commerce customers with a very simple possibility of using DPD as an additional service provider. Consumers benefit, too, because the DPD Pickup parcelshops provide them with an additional 6,000 locations for handing in their returns. In addition DPD is also introducing a mobile parcel label for returns. This means that only a smartphone is required for the paper-free return of a parcel to the consignor from a Pickup parcelshop. Within Germany return parcels as a rule reach the consignor within 1 - 2 working days.
"Our new services represent a major expansion of our returns portfolio", explains Michael Knaupe, Director Products and Services at DPD in Germany. "E-commerce shippers can conveniently include DPD as an additional service provider without any changes to their established processes. With access to 6,000 Pickup parcelshops DPD is providing even more convenience for consumers, too. In addition, with our network we ensure fast return transport. This is increasingly important for our retail customers, because the faster the goods are returned, the earlier they can be sold once more to a different shopper."
Flexible service provider selection with DPD's multi-carrier solution
As a new option DPD is now accepting, on behalf of its customers, parcels with return labels which can also be read by other parcel services. This makes it possible to offer consumers the choice of selecting the return service provider in line with what parcel shop is most convenient for returning the parcel. A specific DPD parcel label is no longer required for this, because the return parcel label provided by the online or mail order retailer is automatically recognised when it is scanned at the DPD Pickup parcelshop. This means that DPD return parcels can be integrated into the retailer's processes without the need to make any organisational changes.
After it is handed in at a Pickup parcelshop the return parcel is immediately transported by DPD to the original shipper. As a rule the shipment arrives within only 1 – 2 working days after it is handed in at the parcel shop, and can then be processed further without delay. As a result clothing which has been supplied in the wrong colour, for example, can quickly be returned to stock and is then available for further sale. Reducing the time lag between the original sale and a possible renewed sale is becoming increasingly important for retailers who ship with DPD.
Return by smartphone: the mobile return label
DPD's retail customers have a range of options for enabling the convenient return of goods by consumers. Sending a return label with the shipment is a convenient solution for the consumer, but in comparison to the paperless alternative it means additional work for the shipper. As a result more and more of DPD's retail customers are using DPD's returns portal, which enables consumers to generate a return label themselves if necessary. This return label is now also available in mobile form: the DPD returns portal enables the creation of a mobile parcel label which replaces the physical return label. In this case the consumer receives an email containing a QR code. When the return parcel is handed in at the Pickup parcelshop, this code is then simply displayed on the smartphone. The modern scanner at the shop links the QR code with the parcel, and the goods are then shipped directly back to the original consignor. The retail shipper can therefore significantly reduce the work and resources involved in processing returns, and with no loss of convenience for the consumer. Regardless of which option is used for the return shipment, the goods reach the retailer within 1 – 2 working days after the parcel is handed in at the Pickup parcelshop.
Last year DPD launched the mobile parcel label for non-business customers who drop off their parcels at a Pickup parcelshop for dispatch. This was DPD's response to the fact that fewer and fewer households have their own printer nowadays, while smartphone use is rising all the time. The mobile parcel label for returns is the logical next stage of this service for private shippers.
International returns: 26,000 Pickup parcelshops by the end of the year
With the 'Pickup' parcel shop brand DPD has a shop network which operates to uniform standards throughout Europe, and offers an uncomplicated, harmonised system for cross-border return shipping. For German e-commerce suppliers this removes a significant barrier to their entry to further European markets. By the end of the year the system will contain 26,000 locations, which will be networked more closely than is the case with any other service provider. These locations appear on 13 European markets as Pickup parcelshops. DPD is the only parcel service to be represented with a uniform shop network in so many countries. In addition to their shared branding the Pickup parcelshops also have a uniform infrastructure and IT equipment – which is of especial importance to the convenient handling of returns in international online retailing.

After winning prestigious prizes such as the Digital Transformation Award, Germany's Prize for Online Communication and the eco Internet Award, with this new prize DPD has once more convincingly demonstrated how a service provider can - by combining added value for the customer with inspiring features - make a mark for itself with digital innovation leadership on the market. Every year the International Design Center Berlin (IDZ) honours electronic products and digital solutions for their outstanding design and impressive user orientation with its UX Design Award. In its verdict the jury stated: "The DPD app optimises the flow of information and provides consignees with a convenient system for managing their parcels. Accordingly DPD has provided the logistics market with its 'next level' app". Previously the DPD app had been selected from hundreds of entries from many different countries and has become part of a special exhibition of the UX Design Awards, which will be on view to visitors at the IFA trade show until 7 September.

Cologne/Aschaffenburg, 24 June 2016 – DPD in Germany has won year’s German Internet Business Association’s eco Award: in the “Smart B2C” category the DPD app was honoured as one of the most innovative projects in the Internet field. The DPD app, which was launched September 2015, enables consignees to manage and track their parcels flexibly. In explaining the grounds for its decision the jury stated: “Thanks to the DPD app parcel shipping has managed the step up into the digital era, and has now become an experience with gamification character.” The eco Internet Award is presented by eco, Europe's largest Internet business association. Aschaffenburg, 1 June 2016 – International parcel and express service provider DPD is entering into a partnership with the children's aid organisation Plan International Deutschland e.V. At the start of the cooperation DPD will be offering 50 sponsorships for young boys and girls in Africa, Asia and Latin America, thus supporting the Plan International projects aimed at improving the circumstances of children, their families and communities in these regions. The focus is on providing support for children and improving their educational opportunities. At DPD trainees at locations throughout Germany will take charge of the sponsorships.
DPD CEO Boris Winkelmann states: "As an international parcel service DPD links people and societies throughout the world," adding: "as a result, for us social responsibility does not stop at our own national borders. Right at the beginning of their careers our apprentices need to experience this commitment and help to support it. Plan International is an excellent partner for this purpose." Wolfgang Porschen, the member of the Plan management with responsibility for corporate cooperations, adds: "In DPD we have acquired a strong partner which shares our commitment to implementing holistic and sustainable projects. We are really looking forward to this cooperation!"
To launch the partnership, which is planned for the long term, DPD will initially be sponsoring 50 children, with the company's trainees playing a central role. As the sponsors they will be assuming direct social responsibility, maintaining regular contact with the children they sponsor, writing letters and receiving reports about what has been achieved with the sponsorship funds. The support they provide to the sponsored children will be on a voluntary basis, while DPD will be responsible for the entire funding. As the trainees can continue their sponsorship even after the end of their apprenticeship, the number of active sponsorships will increase in the course of time. In addition the number of trainees at DPD is growing constantly. At present DPD has a total of 252 trainees in 14 different occupational specialisations at 76 locations throughout Germany.
Social responsibility is one of the four pillars of the DrivingChange™ sustainability strategy which was presented for the entire international DPDgroup in February of this year. The strategy attaches particular importance to direct participation by employees. For example, staff at the company's HQ in Aschaffenburg are regularly given time off for the 'DPD Volunteers' Days', at which they provide active support for social projects in the region.

Aschaffenburg / Essen, 04 May 2016 – International parcel and express service provider DPD has significantly enlarged its capacity in Essen: thanks to an investment of 8.5 million euros it will in future be possible to sort and handle twice as many parcels as in the past. Initially DPD will be processing around 50,000 parcels a day, but in future this is to rise to 70,000 – approximately twice the volume which could be handled in the past. The expansion of the depot means that a considerably larger number of locations in the Ruhr area will be served from Essen.
"DPD is registering very strong rates of growth, caused in particular by the boom in online retailing", states regional director Dr. Jörg Schmeidler. "After our expansion operations we are well-prepared for future growth. We therefore regard the investment of €8.5 million as a long-term commitment to Essen and to the jobs at this location."
The extension work began in November 2014 and continued while operations at the depot were ongoing. Early in May two additional sorting halls and a new unloading section came on stream. Every hour 10,000 parcels can now be sorted in Essen, a significant increase on the previous 6,000 parcels. In addition the number of possible delivery tours has also been doubled: in the past up to 100 delivery drivers were based in Essen, but in future this number could rise to 200.
As a result of the doubling of capacities, significantly larger number of towns in the Ruhr area will be served from Essen: Oberhausen and Bottrop were added with effect from the start of May, and on 1 September large parts of Gelsenkirchen as well as Velbert and Hattingen will follow. In addition to the city of Essen itself, the depot has so far served the towns of Bochum, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Herne and Gladbeck. Since the year 2007 DPD has been based in Ruhrglas Street, Essen, and currently employs a team of 250 at the depot.

Bindlach / Aschaffenburg, 14 April 2016 – Just under one year from the launch of the strategic parcel-shop partnership between DPD and NKD in Germany, the companies are registering growing parcel volumes. This is confirmed by the fact that the one-millionth parcel has now been delivered via the Pickup parcelshops in over 1,300 branches of NKD. There are DPD parcel shops in every German branch of NKD, one of the country's largest clothing retailers. At the Pickup parcelshops NKD customers can not only hand in parcels for shipping - they are also increasingly using them as collection points for their parcels. In addition the branches of NKD are also important locations for handing in parcels which are to be returned.
"We regard the achievement of one million parcels processed at our parcel shops as impressive confirmation of our successful partnership with DPD", comments Christian Welles, Director of Sales at NKD Holdings. "With every parcel we are providing our customers with an additional service. In addition the parcels business boosts customer footfall in the branches of NKD, which provides significant conversion potential." In future NKD and DPD intend to exploit these possibilities in an even more targeted way with shared marketing operations.
Michael Knaupe, Director Products & Services at DPD, adds: "NKD is one of the most important strategic partners for our network of Pickup parcelshops. The high density level of well-placed NKD locations makes it really easy for our customers to integrate the shipping and collection of DPD parcels into their everyday routines."
In the course of the year the monthly parcel volumes have grown continuously, and in March the NKD branches for the first time processed more than 100,000 parcels in a single month. At the same time the role played by these shops as an alternative delivery point is becoming increasingly important. With the DPD app or on the online portal paketnavigator.de consignees can conveniently redirect their parcels to a nearby Pickup parcelshop – a function which is even available to them while the parcel is already in the delivery van. DPD then notifies the consignee by email as soon as the parcel is available for collection from the local NKD branch. Alternatively customers can specify directly when they enter their shipping instructions that the parcel should be delivered to an NKD branch of their choice. This is especially convenient for people who are rarely at home during the day, because they can pickup the parcel from NKD whenever it suits them.
Exact delivery time forecast now also available for direct deliveries to a parcel shop
Shipping is now even more convenient for customers who specify a Pickup parcelshop as the delivery address. On the day of the delivery to the parcel shop DPD notifies the consignee down to the last minute when the parcel will probably be available for collection from the shop. This enables consignees to plan their day as it suits them, and without having to wait for the goods they order. Of course it also continues to be possible to collect the parcel later, at any time within seven calendar days. As in the past consignees receive a further message on delivery, and are reminded by email to pick up their parcel, if necessary.
The delivery-time prediction service upgrade applies to all Pickup parcelshops, and is of course available for all branches of NKD. The upgrade of the direct delivery to parcel shops is in line with the Predict service for deliveries to the home. For every parcel DPD provides a precise time window of one hour, which is reduced to 30 minutes in the course of the delivery. During the delivery process consignees can track the process of their parcel on an online map, and can see how many stops the driver still has to make before their own parcel is delivered. A wide range of options enables consignees to adapt the delivery to their everyday routine: apart from redirecting the parcel to a Pickup parcelshop, consignees can also specify that it should be delivered to a neighbour or to a different address, for example their place of work. The day of delivery can also be postponed.

Nuremberg, 11 April 2016 – City logistics 2.0 in Nuremberg: under the scientific leadership of the Nuremberg Institute of Techology CEP service providers DPD and GLS are testing the use of micro-depots and transport bikes in the city centre and in a residential district of the city. The project is supported by Bavaria's Interior Ministry, the Nuremberg Chamber of Commerce for Central Franconia, and the City of Nuremberg. The pilot project was officially launched in Nuremberg last Friday.
The aim of the 'pilot project for sustainable city logistics featuring CEP services based on the micro-depot concept in Nuremberg' is to develop innovative solutions for the so-called 'last mile' and then test them in practice. In two geographically separate field trials, parcels destined for retailers and consumers are to be deposited in centrally located containers, vehicles or buildings. From there the parcel couriers use emissions-free alternatives such as transport bikes or hand trucks, which effectively reduces the impact of traffic on busy inner-city areas.
The aim of the Building Department of Bavaria's Ministry of the Interior, Construction and Transport, the principal sponsor of the project, is to reduce transport emissions by developing innovative and ecologically sustainable solutions for the 'last mile'. Further funding is provided by the city of Nuremberg and the Nuremberg Chamber of Commerce and Industry for Central Franconia.
Dr. Michael Fraas, Nuremberg's Deputy Mayor for Economic Affairs, confirms the significance of innovative city logistics concepts as an important precondition for future-compatible retail operations in the city centre: "In view of changing consumer habits and the challenges posed by the growth in online retail, bricks-and-mortar retailers need to have the opportunity to supply their customers with goods conveniently and fast. CEP services play a key role in this respect. Our pilot project is an important future component for retail operations in the city centre and accordingly for the vitality of the inner city."
Project leader Prof. Ralf Bogdanski adds: "CEP services represent an essential basic supply service for our city and ensure a vibrant retail culture. The micro-depot concept with deliveries on foot and the use of transport bikes meets the ecological, economic and social sustainability objectives of municipalities, CEP services and the retail industry to a very high degree. We are especially proud of the fact that two major players in the parcels business - DPD and GLS - are participating in our shared pilot project."
Gerd Seber, Group Manager Sustainability & Innovation at DPD, explains: "Intelligent city logistics is essential when it comes to continuing to supply inner-city retailers with goods and linking the urban population with online retailing worldwide. In this respect delivery concepts based on micro-depots can be a highly effective response to the challenges represented by the growth in inner-city traffic." In the case of DPD 'intelligent city logistics' is one of the four pillars of the company's DrivingChange™ sustainability strategy, which was presented in February this year for the entire international DPDgroup.
From the summer of 2016 onwards the micro-depots will - on the basis of detailed analysis - be tested in daily operations in Nuremberg, the ideal location for the project. The preliminary planning was carried out by the Federal Association of International Express and Courier Services (BIEK).

Aschaffenburg, 1 April 2016 – Today international parcel and express service provider DPD is celebrating its birthday: on 1 April 1976 the company was founded as a joint venture by 18 leading freight forwarders. Within only a few years DPD had grown to become Germany's market leader in parcel shipping for business customers. DPD has maintained this position to the present day and – in line with the growth in online retailing – has developed into a major player in parcel shipping to private customers.
In 1976, the year it was founded, DPD already delivered 1.4 million parcels throughout Germany – today it delivers 3.6 million parcels every single day in an international network. The company has continuously developed its profucts and services, with parcel shipping to non-business consignees becoming increasingly important. "Innovation is more essential than ever on today's e-commerce driven market", states DPD CEO Boris Winkelmann, adding: "DPD is therefore taking a leading role in the digitalisation process and is demonstrating its pioneering capacity with innovative services – for example with the notification of a one-hour delivery window, flexible redirection options and map-based parcel tracking in real time."
At DPD digital services are applied several million times a day – not just in Germany but in the company's entire international network. For example, the exact prediction of a one-hour delivery window is now available in 22 European countries. The essential infrastructure for parcel shipping to non-business consignees is also provided by a closely integrated network of more than 22,000 Pickup parcelshops in 14 countries. On a daily basis 800 distribution depots, 37,000 delivery vehicles and 624 cross-border linehaul operations provide an unparalelled network linking the various domestic markets.
DPD took its first steps towards international expansion in the early Nineties, while at the same time it was building up a network in Germany's new federal states. In the course of the company's international growth GeoPost, a subsidiary of France's La Poste, acquired a majority shareholding in DPD in 2001. GeoPost currently holds 93.79 per cent of the shares in DPD, with the remaining shares being owned by DPD Zeitfracht, one of the original founding partners. Today the DPD brand is prominently represented on all European markets in the new brand identity which was rolled out in March 2015 under the DPDgroup umbrella.
Over the past five years majority shareholder GeoPost has increased its turnover by 54 per cent. In the year 2015 one billion parcels were for the first time shipped within the international network and GeoPost registered turnover of 5.7 billion euros – on a like-for-like basis this represents growth of 9.1 per cent on the year before. With an increase of 8 per cent DPD in Germany was one of the main drivers of this growth.

Aschaffenburg, 10 March 2016 – This year the "DPD Initiative for People in Aschaffenburg” will be providing financial support for the innovative "Bench in the station district” project organised by Aschaffenburg’s Railway Mission, as well as for 12 further social projects. For this purpose DPD in Germany, the Aschaffenburg-based international parcel and express service provider, is making available an overall amount of 30,000 euros. The projects to be supported have been selected by an independent jury consisting of Klaus Herzog, the Mayor of Aschaffenburg, the city's Catholic Dean Wolfgang Kempf, and representatives of the DPD workforce.
Launching the project at the main railway station in Aschaffenburg Mayor Klaus Herzog stated: "For our city and well beyond it the ‘Bench in the station district’ project is a real innovation which will help us to identify and contact people in need. I am delighted that with the support of DPD it is possible to implement this project at a central meeting point for the people of our region."
The project revolves around a movable wooden bench, which will be positioned at different locations in the station district during the coming months. In addition to a social worker, personalities from the worlds of politics and culture will take their place on the "Bench in the station district", for the purpose of providing everyone in the district with an accessible opportunity for dialogue. In addition, aid facilities for homeless people in the station area can be publicised and made accessible. This concept, which is unique in this form, was inspired by the "WANDERBANK" (travelling bench) art project carried out by the artists Christiane Huber and Sanne Kurz on behalf of the IN VIA Bayern charitable organisation, which also made a stop in Aschaffenburg in September 2014. The "Bench in the station district" is organised by the Aschaffenburg Railway Mission and its sponsoring organisation, the IN VIA Catholic Social Work Association for Girls and Women in Aschaffenburg.
Dr. Pia-Maria Zecevic, Senior Group Manager Communications of DPD in Germany, adds: "Innovation also plays a major role in the strategy of DPD. We are therefore especially delighted that the ‘Bench in the station district’ gives us an opportunity to enable a project which radiates an innovative impact well beyond the boundaries of the city."
With 7,600 euros the "Bench in the station district" will this year receive the largest individual contribution from the funds of the "DPD Initiative for People in Aschaffenburg". The overall funding amount of 30.000 euros is to be divided up among the following 13 projects:

This year the total amount which has since 2009 been provided in support funding by the DPD Initiative will reach a total of 180,000 euros. In addition to financial resources, active support will once more be provided this year in the form of the "DPD Volunteers’ Days", at which DPD staff volunteer their services to a range of charitable activities. The projects to be supported will be selected soon, with the involvement of all DPD personnel who are participating in this year's initiative.
Aschaffenburg, 22 Februar 2016 – It has now become even easier for bricks-and-mortar retailers to offer same-day deliveries - thanks to a cooperation which is unique within the industry and features DPD Germany, the same-day delivery specialist tiramizoo and the cash register expert poe®. Orders for same-day shipping can now be directly placed with the POSMAN cash register systems, or with poe's TRADEMAN merchandise management system. As a result, retailers can quickly and conveniently offer their customers delivery on the same day. If necessary, retail multiples can make an immediate check on stocks at their other branches, so that goods which are not available at one location can simply be delivered to the customer’s home by courier. Even bulky goods can conveniently be delivered to the home, enabling customers to continue their shopping trip without fuss or worry. The delivery service is implemented by tiramizoo, the Munich same-day delivery experts in which DPD is a major investor.
The new cash register integration now also enables the same-day delivery of goods which are purchased online and then delivered from a bricks-and-mortar retail outlet. The poe software accordingly covers the entire service spectrum, ranging from warehouse management and product orders via the arrangement of same-day transport to shipment processing. Thanks to the cash register as the universal interface, retailers can now implement omni-channel concepts much more easily and efficiently.
“It has never been easier for high-street retailers to combine a high level of product availability on site with convenient same-day delivery”, comments Michael Knaupe, Director of Products & Services at DPD Germany. “We are gradually planning to integrate further services with the poe cash register systems, enabling retailers to link their sales and shipping channels even more closely.”
Dietmar Papenkordt, Managing Director of poe GmbH & Co. KG, states: “Regardless of whether it’s in the high street or at the online shop, with our systems 'same day' is available at the push of a button. This enables our customers to provide further added value, giving them a significant competitive edge.”
Philipp Walz, Director of Marketing and Sales at tiramizoo, adds: “With same-day delivery an efficient link-up with the customer's logistics systems is essential. Integration with the poe cash register system raises shipping convenience to the customer to a new level, and opens up new potentials for same-day delivery.”
Same-day delivery with tiramizoo is effected within 90 minutes or during a freely selectable two-hour time window between 10 and 20 hrs. This service is currently available in more than 160 towns and cities within Germany and Austria. As the next step further DPD services – for example the processing of returns – are to be integrated with the poe cash register systems.

Aschaffenburg, 1 February 2016 – DPD Germany has successfully completed the integration of its one-time franchisee DPD Systemlogistik. Acquired on 1 April 2015, DPD Systemlogistik has now been completely amalgamated with DPD GeoPost (Deutschland) GmbH, and the seven previous DPD Systemlogistik locations have become part of DPD Germany's new consolidated regional structure. The number of regions within DPD GeoPost (Deutschland) GmbH has been reduced from three to two, with Dr. Jörg Schmeidler in charge of Region North and Thomas Ohnhaus as manager of Region South. As regional managing directors both managers were previously members of the DPD management team, which now also includes Olaf Stüwe as Director Operations.
"With the integration of a highly effective organisational structure we have now fully completed the take-over of DPD Systemlogistik", states DPD CEO Boris Winkelmann. "Our growth strategy is receiving an additional boost from the excellent cooperation with all the previous personnel and business associates of DPD Systemlogistik."
Olaf Stüwe takes up post as Director Operations
In addition to the new regional structure there have been a number of changes to the DPD management team, including the appointment by the DPD Germany board of management of Olaf Stüwe as Director Operations on 1 December. In this capacity he will be responsible for all operational processes within the company, and will also manage the ongoing infrastructure developments. Since July 2015 Olaf Stüwe has been supporting DPD in the fields of local transport and sorting/handling operations, and before that he worked for over 20 years for the parcel service GLS, most recently as Director Field Operations with the Europe-wide GLS Group.
Staff changes from the start of the year
On 1 January Dr. Philip Nölling also took up his post as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of DPD Germany. He replaces Thomas Loock, who left the company at his own wish. Most recently Dr. Philip Nölling was the Commercial Manager of Hermes Logistik Gruppe Deutschland.
Also at the start of the year Bernd Friedel retired from the board of management for reasons of age, although he will continue to support DPD as an advisor on strategic projects. "For decades Bernd Friedel was one of the personalities who shaped DPD Germany", confirms DPD CEO Boris Winkelmann, adding: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank him for what he has done for our company, and I'm delighted that he will still be contributing his experience to us." Bernd Friedel influenced the development of DPD above all as a regional managing director, and most recently played a major part in the integration of DPD Systemlogistik.
