Parcels delivered by bike
In Nuremberg DPD is testing the use of electrically assisted transport bikes. As part of a pilot project under the scientific supervision of Nuremberg Technical University three transport bikes are in operation in different inner-city residential areas. Each transport bike can fully replace a conventional delivery van. The parcel box carried by the bike has a capacity of 1.45 m³, which is enough for up to 80 parcels.
In the busy and narrow roads of the inner city such bikes are more practical and efficient than normal delivery vans. The transport bikes produce no emissions locally, and accordingly generate hardly any particulates in the city and no nitrous gases. DPD is using three similar transport bikes in Hamburg, and further areas of use are to be added on an ongoing basis.
