DPD Switzerland: deliveries by electric truck

31 March 2021 - DPD Switzerland provides climate-neutral delivery of every parcel and without any added cost for customers. DPD is now going a step further and is using an electric truck for its deliveries. The fully electric truck has the most powerful vehicle battery available in Europe and has a range of up to 760 km per battery charge. It currently operates the route between the DPD depot in Möhlin AG and the distribution centre in Buchs ZH.

The DPD e-truck is already on the road

DPD Switzerland has ordered a fully electric Futuricum Logistics 18E truck from the Swiss e-truck brand Futuricum produced by the Winterthur e-mobility expert Designwerk Products AG. The e-truck was delivered at the beginning of March and is in use on the route between the DPD depot in Möhlin AG and the Buchs ZH distribution centre.

"I’m very pleased that DPD Switzerland is one of the first companies to deploy this new, innovative Swiss electric truck,’ says Tilmann Schultze, CEO of DPD Switzerland.

The Futuricum Logistics 18E e-truck was developed by Designwerk Products AG based on a vehicle from Volvo and was tested successfully in November 2019. The battery has a storage capacity of 680 kilowatt hours, making it the most powerful battery on wheels in Europe. Thanks to this 4.5-tonne energy storage unit, the e-truck can achieve a range of 760 kilometres per battery charge.

The extensive capacity of the maintenance-free lithium-ion battery enables maximum runtime during operation as well as a possible second life after use on the road. Recycling of the battery is already possible, with up to 91% of the cell material capable of being recovered.

Thanks to its range of features, the e-truck can fully replace a combustion engine truck and serve all DPD Switzerland routes with no restrictions. This makes it the first long-haul e-truck to operate outside of test environments or predetermined test routes.

At least 80,000 kilometres per year

The Futuricum Logistics 18E will cover at least 80,000 kilometres per year. The e-truck will thus save 90 kilograms of CO2 per hundred kilometres covered compared to equivalent diesel-powered trucks, corresponding to 72 tonnes of CO2 saved per year. It is charged exclusively using green energy from Switzerland at the DPD* depots.

All DPD-operated depots use renewable hydroelectric or solar energy. Additionally, we provide carbon-neutral delivery of every parcel – at no added cost for customers. Our approach: DPD measures CO2 emissions and takes active steps to lower them. To offset the unavoidable emissions from the transportation of parcels, projects for renewable energy and generation of clean energy are financed. By the end of 2025, DPDgroup aims to lower CO2 emissions from vehicles by 30% per parcel compared to 2013.

*At all depots where DPD Switzerland is the sole tenant.
