Lisbon, 8 October 2020 - Because information inspires action, DPD Portugal implemented last year a unique air quality monitoring programme in Lisbon. The delivery vehicles and depots are equipped with sensors that measure in real time the most deleterious fine particles PM2.5

 

Across the world, communities demand cleaner air

DPDgroup recently announced its commitment to the planet, with an ambitious reduction of the environmental footprint in 225 European cities, contributing to the improvement of the quality of life in them. This commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility, DrivingChange^TM, is part of the air quality monitoring programme in 5 European cities, of which Lisbon was a pilot.

Olivier Establet, President of DPD Portugal, explains:

“Since June 2019, through sensors on our fleet and our branches in the city of Lisbon, we measure the finest and most dangerous air particles with each delivery. Now we are going further, and we intend to help one of the areas with the greatest circulation in the city of Lisbon, Avenida Ribeira das Naus, to improve air quality. Thus, we are very pleased to offer the city of Lisbon two totally innovative equipment, the city tree”.

Miguel Gaspar, Deputy Mayor, City of Lisbon, states: 

“This initiative is really useful for our city. It is a decisive project since it enables us to obtain additional key data and to identify green areas and hot spots in the city. Thanks to our successful collaboration with DPDgroup, we are able to improve air quality in the city, and thus have a positive impact on our citizen’s health”.

Using the latest mobile laser-based sensors, our delivery fleet and Pickup parcel shops monitor PM 2.5 air pollution levels in real time. The exhaustive data obtained allowed Lisbon’s authorities to design a unique low emission zone in the heart of the city.

Citizens living in Lisbon will also benefit from this program, as they will be able to check the level of air quality at their doorstep through a web-based interface each time they receive an order from DPD Portugal.

The city trees, a unique structure improving the air quality

This wooden structure is equipped with different types of moss that clean the air and produce oxygen for up to 7,000 people per hour. The integrated IoT technology provides comprehensive information on the status of the equipment as well as providing environmental data around it. The results are available in real time on the dpd.pt website.

Olivier Establet, also states that:

This is another step in our partnership with the Lisbon City Council, following the signatures of the Business Mobility Pact and the Lisbon Capital Verde European Commitment. Our close collaboration with the Chamber allies to the city's decarbonization mission, and our plans are also to make the fleet “zero emissions” in Lisbon by the end of 2022.”

Through this innovative initiative, DPDgroup pursues its ambition to reduce CO2 emissions per parcel by 30% by 2025, compared to 2013, and reaffirms its commitment to have a positive impact on communities, cities, and society in general.
