Thanks to the Green CityHub, DPD Switzerland delivers all of Basel green over the last mile

On Tuesday DPD Switzerland opened the first Green CityHub at the Smart City Lab Basel on the Wolf site. This gives the Basel region a parcel service provider that relies 100 per cent on e-vehicles for the last mile and reduces emissions. At the Basel Wolf site DPD Switzerland benefits from synergies with partners in the Smart City Lab Basel.

The continuously increasing volume of parcels, especially in conurbations, poses an ever greater problem for the environment and the urban population. The burden of traffic and emissions on city centres on the one hand and the management of the increasing volume on the other poses a major challenge for logistics companies. The Green CityHub Basel not only makes delivery over the last mile more flexible, but also creates added value for people and the environment.

Thanks to the new Green CityHub in the Smart City Lab Basel, DPD Switzerland is now supplying another city with seamless green transport over the last mile, in addition to the cities of Schaffhausen and Geneva. DPD Switzerland is thus one step closer to its goal of offering green transport throughout 10 Swiss cities by 2025.

At the opening ceremony on 3 May 2022, the Green CityHub was officially put into operation. The partners of the Smart City Lab Basel and other partners were invited. After a short opening speech, the opening ribbon was symbolically cut. A representative of the DPD partner company Manor AG thinks

"A CO2-neutral delivery of parcels should be promoted in every city... Keep it up!"

An employee of the Basel city administration adds:

"The location at Wolf is ideal for green delivery in the city of Basel. The location is centrally important for the future."

The Smart City Lab Basel promotes innovations in the areas of buildings, mobility, city logistics and beyond for a liveable, sustainable and competitive Switzerland of tomorrow. It offers space and formats to network stakeholders, develop approaches, test ideas and experience smart solutions.

DPD Switzerland works locally with various partners of the Smart City Lab Basel.
In addition to its own e-vans for delivery directly to the recipient's door, parcels are also delivered to Parcel Lockers in Basel's city centre, which are operated by the parcel machine operator "SchlaueBox". This allows recipients to pick up their parcel when it is convenient for them. Thanks to the cooperation with the company UpVolt, the E-Vans are charged with environmentally friendly electricity.

The electrified delivery reduces CO2 emissions by 70 percent. The Green CityHub saves about 11,000 km of travel each month. The parcels are pre-sorted at night in the depot in Möhlin and transported by truck to the Green CityHub Wolf. There, the e-vans are loaded and the consignments delivered.

Facts & Figures Green CityHub Basel Wolf:

• Expected number of parcels per month for delivery: 26,000
• Size of the Green CityHub: 300 m2 interior area plus 290 m2 front area
• 10 e-vans
• 8 tours and 2 spring tours

For DPD Switzerland, responsibility towards the environment is a duty. Since 2012, the parcel service provider has delivered every parcel in a CO2-neutral manner - at no additional cost to customers. It does this by measuring its CO2 emissions, steadily reducing them and offsetting any remaining CO2 emissions.
