Yamato and DPDgroup sign an agreement to promote common standards for calculating greenhouse gas emissions

This strategic collaboration is a new step to enable significant emission reduction

DPDgroup (Headquarters: Paris, France, CEO: Yves Delmas) which is the largest parcel delivery network in Europe, and Yamato Holdings Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo, President: Yutaka Nagao) have signed an agreement for cooperation in the environmental field as part of their business partnership.

A societal shift

In recent years, climate change has become an urgent issue for society as a whole and the need for "reducing greenhouse gas emissions" at the corporate level is increasing. Globally, there is a growing demand for monitoring and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions throughout the supply chain. Even in Japan, TSE prime companies are required to disclose not only scopes 1 and 2 related to their own emissions but also scope 3* including logistics, but the calculation standards for greenhouse gas emissions of each transport company are not commonly implemented.

The Yamato Group has set a long-term goal of "zero greenhouse gas emissions * 1 in 2050", achieved the "Medium-Term Environmental Plan 2023" that it is currently working on, and "48% of its own greenhouse gas emissions in 2030 compared to FY2020." We are proceeding with each initiative toward "reduction * 2".

As announced on Monday 11 July 2022, DPDgroup has submitted a near-term science-based target for 2030 in addition to its target to reach net zero emissions by 2040, 10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement, thus enhancing its overall decarbonization ambition.

The group is taking decisive action to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040 and commits to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 43% by 2030 and 90% by 2040 from a 2020 baseline.

By concluding a contract for cooperation in the environmental field, the two companies will consider common standards for calculating and reporting greenhouse gas emissions and share their know-how in the environmental field throughout the supply chain. Both companies are leaders in their regions with a wealth of experience in sustainability to build on and share to meet global environmental requirements.

Monitoring greenhouse gas emissions

  • Studying common standards for calculating GHG emissions for the realization of sustainable logistics in collaboration with partners

In a context of pressing climate change issues, quickly evolving regulatory environment and increasing customer demand, the partnership aims at contributing to better monitoring and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. We will promote monitoring and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions throughout the supply chain by using a common GHG emission calculation method in collaboration with our partners.

  • Sharing know-how in the environmental field

We will promote decarbonization of both companies through information collaboration in the following four fields.

① Climate change mitigation

② Prevention of air pollution

③ Promotion of resource recycling

④ Improving the resilience of society and companies

This common effort led by DPDgroup and Yamato impacts the wider supply chain and contributes to significantly reducing the greenhouse gas emissions. This collaboration fully responds to the decarbonization strategic plan of DPDgroup to reach net-zero emissions by 2040, in line with the Paris Agreement.

Yamato and DPDgroup have been collaborating for years. A first transport agreement between Chronopost France and Yamato was signed in 2017 to enhance flows between France and Japan. In addition, Fresh Pass, a standard in safety for fresh delivery worldwide was implemented in 2021.
