GeoPost tests drone technology

GeoPost, the international Express Parcel subsidiary of Le Groupe La Poste, has tested theuse of drones. The test, which took place last September at the Centre for Autonomous Model Testing andStudies’ (CEEMA) site in the south of France, demonstrated the possible use of a droneunder real conditions. As part of the tests, the drone successfully carried out a completeand fully automated parcel transportation flight:

  • Take off
  • Flight phase
  • Landing
  • Return to base station.

With its six electric rotors, the drone, which was developed as part of the GeoDroneproject, transported a 2kg parcel over a 1,200-metre distance.

The test validated the strategy selected by GeoPost and Atechsys and, more broadly, theconsiderations revolving around the utilisation of drones to access isolated areas(mountains, islands, rural areas, etc.). This new technology will provide a means ofresponding to several emergency situations.

A prototype developed by Atechsys

GeoPost appointed Atechsys to develop the prototype drone. Atechsys is a companylocated in South of France and specialized in autonomous systems since 2009. SME with ahuman dimension, innovative and reactive, Atechsys became in five years a reference fordrone conception. The cooperation between GeoPost and Atechsys has made it possible to develop a dronecapable of transporting, autonomously, an up top 4 kg parcel within a 20 km radius, regardless of the type of terrain.

Innovation as a driving force for change

By helping to develop alternative and innovative projects, GeoPost is expressing its interestin new technologies.GeoPost is able to work alongside innovative SMEs and help them to develop and improveits own processes. Against this backdrop, the work carried out with Atechsys at CEEMA’slocation has acquired its full meaning and put GeoPost firmly on the path to innovation.
