An interview with Max in person

DPD: ‘Describe yourself and your drive to do sports in five short sentences.’

Max: ‘My friends would describe me as ambitious and determined. My fencing style is characterised by aggression, which makes me an unpleasant opponent for my competitors. In my private life, I’m much calmer and, as a father of three, I’m a big family person. I also love nature and spend time picking mushrooms in the woods or on my fishing boat on Lake Zug.’

DPD: ‘How did your passion for fencing begin, and what motivated you in this sport?’

Max: ‘As a child, I often dressed up as a pirate with my brother in the garden, where we had our first experiences of fencing. After several tournament victories at beginners’ tournaments, I set myself higher and higher goals early on. And so, the dream of turning my hobby into a profession arose at a young age.’

DPD: ‘What is your typical training routine like? How do you balance physical training, tactics and mental preparation?’

Max: ‘I usually train twice a day. It almost always involves a fencing unit. In athletics, it is important to find the right balance between strength, endurance and speed training. The focus of training varies depending on the season.

I do about 20 to 25 hours of training a week.

I work with a psychologist on the mental aspects and do regular autogenic training before I go to sleep. I prepare my tactics at fairly short notice before matches and analyse videos of my opponents’ bouts.’

DPD: ‘What ups and downs have you experienced in your sporting career and how do you generally deal with setbacks?’

Max: ‘Defeats are part of a successful sports career. I often managed to see the positive again quickly after a bad performance at a competition. Without a doubt, I would not have been able to do this without the great people around me or the right approach to handling the failure. As an athlete, you first have to come to terms with both winning and losing.’

DPD: ‘How did the collaboration with DPD Switzerland come about and to what extent has this partnership influenced your sporting career?’

Max: ‘The partnership with DPD Switzerland came about through a fellow athlete. He made DPD aware of this because speed and reliable delivery are values that suit me well as an athlete and as a person. The partnership with DPD Switzerland allows me to focus more on my sport and my family.’

DPD: ‘How important is a strong partnership to you and how would you define one?’

Max: ‘Strong partnerships are very important to me. I choose my partnerships carefully because I believe that the athlete and the company both have to be a good fit. I believe that trust, shared values, close personal contact and the opportunity to define common goals are the key hallmarks of a successful partnership.’

DPD: ‘How would you describe the support you have received from DPD Switzerland?’

Max: ‘The support provided by DPD Switzerland can be described as trusting and structured, but also as relaxed and creative. The partnership is characterised by a relaxed atmosphere in which trust plays a major role.’

DPD: ‘How has your relationship with DPD Switzerland developed over the past year? Were there any special moments or events that have shaped this partnership?’

Max: ‘Over the past year, the relationship with DPD Switzerland has deepened and we have grown closer together.

Special moments in this partnership are, of course, always the personal ones, such as when we competed as the DPD team at the Swiss City Marathon Lucerne.

Events like these shape our partnership and help us connect not only professionally but also personally.’

DPD: ‘What advice would you give to aspiring fencers who also dream of pursuing a professional career, and in your opinion, how could they benefit from support partners like DPD Switzerland?’

Max: ‘Never lose sight of the joy of fencing. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but have fun regardless. Believe in yourself and your abilities. Every good pirate – I mean fencer – has self-confidence. Support from partners such as DPD early on enables young athletes to focus on their goals from the very beginning of their sporting careers and also relieves the financial burden on the parents of the young athlete.’
