DPD Types of customs clearance

Shipping without frontiers.

Depending on which country you are shipping to, DPD offers up to three types of customs clearance. Customs clearance availability and type, and franking may all vary depending on the service and the destination country.

Import customs clearance

Import customs clearance (direct imports) is used when the shipping route is directly from the sending country to the destination country, e.g. a parcel sent with DPD from Switzerland directly to Germany (recipient address in Germany).

EU customs clearance is a process that always involves three countries:

1. Export country
2. Country of entry
3. Import country

Your own fiscal representative supplies the sales tax ID number you need for EU customs clearance and takes care of your tax and Intrastat reporting obligations.

Own sales tax ID number

If you are turning over/exporting 30 or more shipments a month, we recommend that you apply for your own sales tax ID number.

Benefits

  • VAT-free intra-EU delivery
  • Import sales tax (16-25% depending on destination country) without the need for cash payments, advance commissions or interest
  • Become more competitive in the EU market because your shipments can be processed without additional administrative hassle.

EU customs clearance puts Swiss suppliers on the same footing as EU firms.

Fiscal representation facilitates equality in the European Union!

Through fiscal representation, legally you have the same rights in terms of VAT as European companies, such as tax exempt intra-Community supplies. Make use of this service and simplify your export operations from Switzerland to the European Union.

There are two types of fiscal representation to choose from:

Limited fiscal representation

  • Only for EU customs clearance

Permanent fiscal representation

  • Personal VAT registration number in Europe
  • Authorises all customs procedures in the country of registration (EU customs clearance, direct import, etc.)
  • Storage and sales within the European market
