Focusing on a green future – our interim summary on one year of SBTi

It is over a year since we announced that DPD Switzerland’s parent company, Geopost, was the first global parcel delivery company whose short- and long-term carbon reduction targets had been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This year, DPD Switzerland has been able to continue working on its green strategy in a targeted manner and launch projects designed to continue pursuing the plan for a green future and to meet the targets it has set itself.

What is the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and what is its purpose?

The SBTi supports companies in defining targets and measures to avoid greenhouse gases on a scientific basis. The initiative is a collaboration between the Carbon Disclosure Project, the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute and the WWF. The standards of the SBTi are ambitious: ‘net zero’ applies not only to direct emissions (e.g. from company-owned vehicles) but also to all indirect emissions along the entire value chain.

What targets have been defined together with the SBTi?

The goal set by Geopost together with the SBTi is to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040. This is the main goal, which is to be achieved with the support of each individual business unit (BU) and its individually defined targets. In order to make a significant contribution to the achievement of this goal as DPD Switzerland, our green strategy portfolio includes the following targets:

  • Electric delivery in at least ten Swiss cities by 2025

  • Reduction of carbon emissions by 75 % by 2030 (the baseline is 2020)

  • Complete electrification of our DPD delivery fleet, including trucks, by 2035

Our summary of the past year

Looking back at the past year, the figures already show a very positive development in relation to the planned targets. They show, for example, that the absolute carbon emissions of DPD Switzerland have been falling continuously since 2023.

In addition, the figures clearly show that electrification of the delivery and line haul fleet is progressing, with nearly 20 % of the entire fleet currently comprising electric vehicles.

The results also show that around 85 % of the energy consumed by buildings comes from electricity, a large part of which we want to generate ourselves in the future by intelligently installed solar panels in combination with storage systems at our hubs and depots. Furthermore, when comparing the years 2022 and 2023, water consumption fell by 4.9 % to just under 4'450'000 litres in total, which is also attributable to efficient water management.

To summarise, it is clear that we, too, at DPD Switzerland, are continuing on the path towards a green future so that, with our firm focus, our passion and our commitment, we can make an active contribution to the main goal of net-zero emissions by 2040.
