Labelling parcels correctly

A parcel has to be addressed correctly so it can be processed without any issues and delivered efficiently. In this latest serving of helpful information, we explain how to label your parcel correctly. If you want to send a parcel with DPD, you will be required to print out a parcel label, which means that you will need our label templates.

How does a parcel need to be addressed?

To ensure successful delivery, it is essential that we are provided with complete and correct details for the consignee. How to label your parcel correctly:

  • Name
  • Street
  • Building number
  • Postcode
  • Town or city

Address quality
A clearly written address increases the chances of successful delivery. That helps you avoid returns and means your goods reach the consignee quickly, safely and directly.

No PO box addresses
DPD does not deliver parcels to PO box addresses.

International shipping
With parcels for export, always include the ISO country code (ALPHA-2, ALPHA-3) or the numerical code in addition to the postcode. In Austria and Switzerland in particular, there are many identical postcodes. Example: AT-1025 Vienna ≠ CH-1025 St-Sulpice

How can I print a label myself?

We provide you with the label templates. You have a range of options and can print the labels out yourself. You have the following options:

One-off order or up to 30 parcels per month

Do you want to place orders as a private individual or occasional shipper? Then register with DPD Web Parcel. There you can print the labels and get your parcel ready to ship online. You can have your parcel picked up from your home or drop it off at your nearest DPD Pickup parcelshop. Of course, you can also pop into a DPD Pickup parcelshop with your parcel and have the labels printed out there.

More than 30 parcels per month

If you are already a contract customer

If you are a contract customer, you can order self-adhesive labels and other shipping materials here. Do you no longer want to use your current IT solution and switch to another program, or simply find out more about printing parcel labels yourself? Contact us at [email protected].

What do I need to bear in mind when printing labels?

We recommend that you print the labels with a laser printer or label printer. Ink jet printers are highly sensitive and take a while to dry. The labels contain highly fragile barcodes, so it does not take much for something to smudge and the codes to become unreadable. Is an ink jet printer your only option? In this case, we recommend that you leave the printed labels to dry before you stick them to the parcel. If you do not have self-adhesive labels and print the labels on normal paper, we recommend that you cover each label completely with clear packing tape. This will protect the labels and barcodes from the weather and other variables.

Can I send a parcel without providing a sender address?

International orders require you to provide a sender. And for national orders, we will need sender details regardless of whether you are a contract customer and we already have your master data or you want us to deliver a parcel on a one-off basis. Additionally, we generally advise against sending without a sender address because it complicates the returns process, if there is one.

Where do I attach the address on a parcel?

On flat sides on the top of a parcel.
