DPD Austria: plus 2 million parcels in the first half of 2020
- Between January and the end of June 2020 26 million parcels have been transported
- Almost 2 million more parcels than in the reference period of 2019
- Gapless supply throughout corona crisis
Leopoldsdorf near Vienna, 17 th of July 2020. DPD Austria – Austria’s leading privately owned parcel service – shows a positive balance of the first half of 2020 although the company looks back on challenging months: compared to the reference period of 2019 the number of transported parcels has risen nearly 7 % to about 26 million. Despite the additional demands during the corona crisis, DPD has proven to be a reliable partner and scores with a gapless delivery.
the Corona crisis has highlighted the decisive cornerstones for DPD as a parcel service:
digitalization, our drivers and the international network. Our top priority is to be a reliable partner for all our customers – no matter if big or small businesses or private customers – and to uphold the circle of economy. In this we have succeeded, even in this very challenging situation.”
Rainer Schwarz, CEO DPD Austria
Investments and innovations
To meet the challenges of the market and to master all sorts of crisis, DPD Austria has invested 30 million Euros into buildings, cargo hold, technic, safety and the vehicle fleet in the last 3 years. Moreover, digitalization has been expedited further – as a part of DPDs business DNA – for the last 25 years. “We consider digitalization as our obligation, both in our internal processes and when it comes to further expand our services.” Rainer Schwarz explains and gives one of the many examples: “With our parcel management platform myDPD.at customers are able to redirect parcels fast and easy, to track parcels live or to specify a favorite parcelshop. 130.000 registered users prove its success.”
Strong growth – wine logistics and food sector
Looking at the growth rates, they show that wine logistics and the food sector are exceptional, especially during the corona crisis. For about 2.000 winemakers, DPD has sent nearly 120.000 wine cardboxes – mainly filled with Austrian wine – into the world in the first halve of 2020. This means a growth of 150 % in comparison to the same span in 2019. In April alone this segment showed a growth of 260 % in comparison to the same period in 2019.
The situation is similar in the food sector: it shows a growth rate of 18 % compared to 2019. Export figures have also a strong growth in comparison to 2019: from January to the end of June 2,9 million parcels have been sent abroad. This corresponds to a growth of more than 12 % and confirms the performance of the international DPD network – even during lockdown. Also interesting are increases in some countries – the number of parcels sent to Hungary has grown up to 119 % and in the Czech Republic up to 74 %.
Finally, Rainer Schwarz refers to the advantages of the DPD network: “DPDgroup is the biggest international parcel network in Europe and the fastest growing provider. This is a huge benefit for Austrian e-commerce customers, among other things the fast delivery time, the consistent service standards and the already 46.000 locations included in our Pickup network.
