DPD with ambitious goals on the way to greener delivery

Ljubljana, March 2023 | Geopost is the first global parcel delivery company to have its short-term and long-term CO2 reduction targets approved by the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi). This important approval also scientifically supports Geopost's plan to reach the Net Zero goal by 2040 and puts the company on a clear path to become an international reference in the field of sustainable delivery.

We are pleased to announce that Geopost has become the first global parcel delivery company to be approved by the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi) for short- and long-term greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets. This approval is of great importance for Geopost, as it supports the plan to reach the Net Zero target by 2040 and puts the company on a clear path to become an international reference for sustainable delivery.

What is the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)?

The Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi) is an international organization that helps companies set ambitious greenhouse gas reduction targets that are aligned with the goals of the Paris Agreement. The most important goal is to limit the increase in global temperature to 1.5 °C compared to pre-industrial levels.

SBTi unites more than 4,000 companies worldwide that share the same goal - to reduce the impact of global warming, which can cause serious consequences for the environment and society.

Last July, we submitted our ambitious Net Zero target to the Science Based Target initiative, and now we are proud to announce that both the short- and long-term greenhouse gas reduction targets have been approved.

This important milestone confirms our Net Zero ambition by 2040, which is aligned with climate science and puts us on a clear path to becoming an international reference in sustainable delivery. To achieve this, we will mainly focus on:

  • electrification of our vehicle fleet, for last-mile delivery, as well as for line vehicles and warehouses. We will focus strongly on replacing fossil fuels with alternative energy sources (including electric vans, bicycles and foot delivery) to 85 % by 2030 (100 % by 2035);

  • diversifying our liner fleet to include alternative propulsion technologies such as biogas, biofuel, electric and hydrogen powered trucks and moving more parcels by rail, all to increase the share of alternative liner solutions to 50 % by 2030 (100 % by 2040),

  • transition to renewable energy for powering logistics locations and offices and transition to greater energy efficiency with the goal of using 70 % of energy from renewable sources by 2030 (100 % by 2035),

  • electrification of our fleet of company vehicles by increasing the share of electric vehicles to 90 % by 2030 (100 % by 2035).

What does this mean for our CO2 neutral delivery?

We still offer CO2 neutral delivery, but we are focusing on reaching the Net Zero target by 2040.

It is important to distinguish between Net Zero and CO2 neutral delivery. Net Zero means reducing CO2 emissions as close to zero as possible, and any remaining emissions are reabsorbed through high-quality carbon removal programs, while CO2 neutral delivery means that the organization offsets its emissions by purchasing voluntary emission coupons that reduce CO2 emissions.

Our science-based Net Zero targets cover 20 of our business units (including DPD Slovenia). This important step in Geopost's decarbonisation strategy is in line with La Poste Group's goal of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2040.
