DPD restructures its German organisation and launches the amalgamation of all its operating units under the banner of DPD Deutschland

  • All subsidiaries and franchise structures in Germany to be merged into one company.

  • For the very first time DPD will operate in Germany as a single company.

  • Rebranding into DPD Deutschland GmbH to be implemented in the following months.

Aschaffenburg, 10 January 2017 – International parcel and express service provider DPD is establishing a new corporate structure in Germany. In addition to its recently acquired former shareholding partner DPD Zeitfracht, all the franchisor's subsidiaries and corporate divisions which are responsible for coordinating operations in Germany are to be amalgamated with DPD GeoPost (Deutschland) GmbH under the new company name of DPD Deutschland. This means that after the expected completion of the amalgamation in August 2017, DPD will for the first time have a uniform corporate organisation in Germany which includes all operating units. This development has been made possible by the acquisition of DPD Zeitfracht, the last remaining co-shareholder, in October 2016. With this purchase La Poste subsidiary GeoPost acquired full ownership of DPD.

"This is a further milestone in the history of DPD"

DPD CEO Boris Winkelmann

The result is that the successful franchise system under which DPD was established forty years ago as Germany's first private parcel service is now being merged into a single company. "This is a further milestone in the history of DPD", comments DPD CEO Boris Winkelmann. "We are tightening and modernising our structure, which will increase the efficiency of our operational management. It also highlights our resolve not only to continue the dynamism of the last forty years but also to increase the tempo and shape the future development of the parcel market with innovation leadership."

All the necessary steps for the amalgamation under company law have been initiated. The process will probably be completed in August 2017 with the relevant entry in the commercial register. The change of the company name to DPD Deutschland GmbH will take place as early as next month.

All the operating units of the original franchisor organisation - including DPD Dynamic Parcel Distribution GmbH & Co. KG with its subsidiaries in Germany, as well as DPD iloxx eService GmbH and DPD Zeitfracht GmbH – are to be merged into one company. At the same time DPD Dynamic Parcel Distribution GmbH & Co. KG will, under the name DPDgroup International Services GmbH & Co. KG, continue to operate as an independent unit and carry on its franchise operations on behalf of the international DPDgroup.

DPD was founded in 1976 as a joint venture by 18 leading German freight forwarders, but in 2001 La Poste subsidiary GeoPost became the majority owner of the company after requiring 83.32 percent of the shares. Under Boris Winkelmann, who has been CEO since 2014, the remaining minority shareholders and franchisees in Germany were gradually acquired, together with their shareholdings and operating locations. This included the acquisition of DPD Systemlogistik in 2015 with its seven depots in southern Germany and Saxony, together with around 1400 depot staff and delivery drivers. In September 2015 the franchisee DPD Altentreptow GmbH followed, with one depot and 140 employees and delivery drivers in Mecklenburg Western Pomerania. The process was completed in October 2016 when DPD Zeitfracht was integrated into DPD's regional structure with its 470 employees at two DPD depots in Berlin and one depot in Raunheim (Frankfurt am Main region, Hessen).

With a depot workforce of 8,000 and 9,000 delivery personnel working at 77 locations and a shipping volume of 350 million parcels a year DPD is Germany's second-largest parcel service. The company leads the market in shipping between business customers, and it occupies a rapidly growing third place in e-commerce driven parcel deliveries to private consignees. Thanks to digital services such as the notification of a one-hour delivery time window, online map-based parcel tracking in real-time and its multiple award-winning app DPD has established itself as the innovation leader on Germany's parcel market. As part of DPDgroup, the European parcel and express network of GeoPost, a subsidiary of France's La Poste, DPD operates within Europe's second-largest parcel service with turnover of 5.7 billion euros and a shipping volume of more than 1 billion parcels in the year 2015.
