50 Years of DPD in the German Market: From Pioneer to Modern Logistics Provider

Aschaffenburg, July 9th 2026 – On April 1, 1976, an idea took root that would permanently transform the parcel market in Germany: 18 freight forwarders founded the German Parcel Service (DPD) with the goal of making shipping faster, more reliable, and more efficient for businesses and customers. Today, 50 years later, that idea has evolved into a Europe-wide networked logistics service provider handling millions of shipments daily and actively shaping the industry.

DPD does not see the anniversary as a traditional retrospective, but rather as an opportunity to redefine its own role in the evolving landscape of logistics. For rarely before has the industry been as dynamic as it is today: rising shipment volumes, changing customer expectations, new technological possibilities, and the growing commitment to make logistics more sustainable through innovative solutions.

DPD was an early pioneer of many developments that are now considered standard: from automated sorting and shipment tracking to precise delivery forecasts. As early as the 1980s, around 80 percent of parcels reached their recipients the next day - a milestone for that time.

With the rise of e-commerce, the business has changed fundamentally. DPD has responded by continuously evolving its offering—from pure B2B logistics to flexible solutions for businesses and private customers. Today, it is no longer just about transporting packages from A to B, but about how seamlessly logistics integrate into everyday life. Flexible delivery options, digital services, and a dense network of parcel shops and lockers play a central role in this.

One example of this development is the expansion of Out of home solutions: Together with partners, DPD is driving the development of a nationwide network that enables the shipment and receipt of packages regardless of fixed delivery times. The goal is to provide access to a total of around 20,000 Out of home locations in Germany and to provide an open, carrier-neutral ecosystem for both shippers and recipients.

Partnerships have always been part of DPD’s DNA—from its beginnings as a cooperative of mid-sized freight forwarders to its current integration into Geopost’s international network. These connections, forming Europe’s fastest road network, are a clear advantage for customers, enabling efficient cross-border logistics while remaining closely aligned with customer needs.

The parcel logistics industry will continue to be shaped by profound changes in the future - technological, structural, and societal. The key drivers of this development are digitalization, artificial intelligence and innovative, sustainable last-mile delivery models. In this context, DPD’s 50th anniversary in Germany marks not only a milestone, but also a moment of reflection and outlook:

This is an extraordinary anniversary in a highly competitive industry such as parcel logistics. It proves that we can combine decades of experience with continuous process innovation and state-of-the-art technologies, and that we must keep evolving. 50 years of DPD Germany—that is a clear commitment to continuing to deliver tailored solutions for our customers and to actively shaping the development of the industry. Above all, I would like to thank the people at DPD whose dedication and daily commitment ensure that our customers can rely on us. They are what has defined DPD for the past 50 years.
