DPD Germany builds up parcel capacities: new depot in Mannheim starts operations

  • In future up to 20,000 parcels per day will be sorted on over 5,000 square metres

  • DPD Germany invests 10 million euros

  • DPD's 79th depot relieves the pressure on the existing facility in nearby Worms

Mannheim/Aschaffenburg, 14 September 2020 – Last weekend the new DPD depot in Mannheim began operations. Initially around 16,500 parcels per day will be processed there on over 5,000 square metres. After a successful start-up phase the new parcel facility will be able to sort as many as 20,000 parcels a day. Operations will be carried out by around 180 employees and will provide significant relief for the depot in nearby Worms.

We now save a lot of time because we're 35 kilometres and therefore about half an hour closer to the delivery area, which also cuts down on travel distances and CO2 emissions.“

Daniel Ay, Depot Manager Mannheim

DPD Germany had reached the limits of its capacity at the Worms parcel sorting centre, and further expansion was no longer possible there. At the same time no suitable site for a new building was available in the region. As a result the international parcel and express service provider acquired and refitted an existing building in Mannheim, from which among others the cities of Mannheim, Heidelberg and Walldorf will be supplied with parcels in future.

Inside the building a new, ultra-modern parcel sorting facility was installed by BUDDE Fördertechnik, a long-standing partner to DPD. The system is built to the latest standards and is equipped with extremely low-consumption, low-noise motors and drives. In the initial start-up phase it will be possible to sort up to 16,500 parcels a day here, with daily parcel volumes rising to 20,000 in future. In addition, the new Mannheim depot also offers opportunities for further capacity expansion. If necessary it will be possible to process about 3,500 additional parcels per day.

Apart from relieving the pressure on the depot in Worms, depot manager Daniel Ay believes that the Mannheim location also offers further advantages: "By moving to Mannheim we are crossing the Rhine, which is a natural border. Until now drivers had to cross the river every morning - with a limited number of road bridges. We now save a lot of time because we're 35 kilometres and therefore about half an hour closer to the delivery area, which also cuts down on travel distances and CO2 emissions.“ In addition, the depot is in an ideal location: the motorway is just 10 minutes away and the city of Mannheim and the adjacent Rhine-Neckar region are easily accessible.

In terms of planning the addition of the Mannheim facility to the depot network offers DPD Germany further opportunities in the region. The relief provided to the Worms parcel distribution centre now makes the planning for this location easier. At the same time the new depot's proximity to various metropolitan regions also offers an opportunity to expand the electrically powered vehicle fleet. In summing up these advantages Daniel Ay states: "We see enormous potential in terms of converting our vehicles to environmentally friendly delivery, which we are already implementing in the form of cargo bikes in Heidelberg, for example. But it' s not only the surrounding cities that are suitable for such a delivery service. Some peripheral areas are also potentially suitable for delivery by electronically operated vehicles."
